The pandemic has forced the restaurant and food industry to go through a complete overhaul and restaurant interior design has had a rethink too. 2022 is, and will be, a year of big changes – here’s a list of some restaurant design trends we are noticing.

The Rooftop Dining Experience
Rooftop dining is a restaurant design trend that’s here to stay. Outdoor dining of course grew in popularity due to the pandemic, but rooftops have come into their own.
If your restaurant has roof access and you are able to obtain the proper permits to build on your roof, it’s likely to be a good investment to turn your roof into a dining space. Add umbrellas in summer, outdoor patio heaters in winter and even dome igloos (!) and use your rooftop all year round.
Texture, Texture, Texture
It is all about being unique and texture is here to stay.
Restaurant interior design trends are seeing a greater focus on mixing and layering different textures and finishes. Patterned fabrics are paired with plush textiles and wooden floors; metal lighting fixtures are paired with concrete-like flooring and wall finishes; artworks are added to give an extra layer of interest.
Furniture is also mixed and matched. Contrasting furniture has been a trend in home design and is moving into restaurant spaces to help people feel even more at home. Find tables and chairs that are the same colour, but different style.
Making a statement and being unique have never been more important.
Local Flavour
It is all about experience and restaurants need to be memorable.
Locally sourced ingredients has been a trend for a while, but now we’re seeing the physical space reflect the community as well. 2022 is seeing an emphasis on both custom-made and hand-made elements for restaurants, creating a unique, recognisable style for each establishment.
Associating a restaurant with local roots, local artists and local craftsmen, allows a restaurant to score big points with customers.
Industrial Continues
The industrial trend continues in 2022 – unfinished concrete surfaces, metal pipes, visible ducts, high ceilings and exposed structural systems.
The hospitality industry has seen a massive adoption of this trend over the last 2 decades with restaurants taking their cue from old warehouses and factories, with designers using materials such as leather and wood and good lighting to soften these often harsh interiors.
Seating Comfort
Making customers feel at home is a definite trend with more upholstery, soft pillows and cushioned seats used in the form of booths, chairs, and lounge areas.
Inspired by Nature
2022 is tapping into the power of plants with some restaurants even growing their own vegetables. These can be used as part of the decor, as there is no doubt, natural greenery is beautiful.
Without a doubt, this restaurant interior design trend is one that will never fade away.
Open Kitchen Concept
Restaurants have increasingly begun incorporating the open kitchen restaurant into interior design.
Having a view of the open kitchen, not only builds trust and displays transparency it also turns food prep into theatre. An open kitchen provides an immersive experience, with diners able to see, smell, and hear their food being made.
